Scoria is pH neutral while possessing a huge matrix of porous microscopic internal structures. This matrix gives the Scoria a huge surface area for the colonization of beneficial bacteria which contribute to the conversion of toxic ammonia to harmless elements. Scoria's colors range from bright red to black with black being the rarest. This dark color is extremely sought after as it contrasts brilliantly with all colored aquatic life and aquarium plants.
