DESCRIPTION: Dexamethasone-SP Injection uses Sodium Phosphate as an anti-inflammatory for horses, or as a rapid adrenal glucocorticoid.
Key Benefits:
Dexamethasone offers glucocorticoid action, and it is also a synthetic corticosteroid. Available as Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate, this ingredient is particularly beneficial for intravenous injection due to its water solubility. This allows for relatively large doses to be administered in a small diluent volume. When used as a steroid, Dexamethasone is equipotent to many steroids and significantly more powerful than many others.
Formulated For: Intended for horses only.
How is Medication Given?
Administer intravenously. Typical recommended dosage rate for horses is 2.5 mg-5 mg. If the animal requires continuous corticosteroid treatment, oral Dexamethasone administration might be recommended by your vet as a substitute. When withdrawing corticosteroid treatment after long-term use, gradually reduce daily administration rate over many days.
What Results Can I Expect? Dexamethasone-SP Injection works as an anti-inflammatory or rapid adrenal glucocorticoid for horses.
What Form Does Medication Come In? Injectable
Dose and Administration: Sold as a sterile vial containing 100 mL (4 mg Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate per mL).
Possible Side Effects: Experimental and clinical data show that orally-administered or injected corticosteroids can induce parturition (first stage) when used during the final trimester of pregnancy. They can precipitate premature parturition and subsequent metritis, retained placenta, fetal death, and/or dystocia. They can also produce cleft palates, anasarca, phocomelia, or deformed forelegs in the offspring of treated rodents, rabbits, or dogs.
Precautions:
If an infection occurs, antibacterials should be administered for a minimum of 3 days following the last hormone dose and after infection symptoms have disappeared. Exercise caution when administering to animals with diabetes, osteoporosis, or congestive heart failure. Except in emergency applications, this product should not be administered to animals with chronic nephritis or tuberculosis. Do not administer to treat a viral infection. Keep out of reach of animals and children.
Storage Recommendations: Do not freeze. Store in a cool and dry location 15-30 degrees C (59- 86 degrees F)
In Case of Overdose: Call your nearest emergency pet hospital.
