DESCRIPTION: Butatron Phenylbutazone treats a broad range of equine musculoskeletal disorders, including muscle sprain and strain, muscle overuse (including strain or damage of the tendons attaching bones to muscles or damage to the muscle itself), tendonitis, acute joint injury, acute strains, acute sprains, and arthritis. Key Benefits: The anti-inflammatory benefits of this compound produce an analgesic effect. Formulated For: Intended for horses only. How is Medication Given? Phenylbutazone is available in several oral forms (gel, paste, or tablet), as well as an intravenous injection. Maximum recommended dose (administered orally) is 2 to 4 grams per 1000 pounds of body weight daily. For best results, divide the total daily dose to administer every 8 hours. This recommendation is based upon rapid drops in blood levels. In many cases, desired results can be achieved with once- to twice-daily administration. What Results Can I Expect? Tablet Dose and Administration: Each bottle contains 100 tablets. Possible Side Effects: Discontinue administration if total white counts decrease, relative granulocytes decrease, or if the animal experiences black or tarry stools. If these reactions occur, countermeasures are needed. In rare cases, fatal side effects have been noted in dogs receiving long-term therapy. Preventatively, weekly routine blood counts should be taken in the early stages of treatment, and bi-weekly thereafter. In human use, drug-related agranulocytosis has been reported in certain cases. Discontinue use if the animal experiences stomach upset, jaundice, or blood dyscrasia.
