DESCRIPTION: Otibiotic Ointment combines Clotrimazole, Betamethasone, and Gentamicin to treat acute or chronic canine otitis externa, which is often caused by susceptible bacteria or yeast (Malassezia pachydermatis). Key Benefits: Gentamicin Sulfate, an active ingredient in Otibiotic Ointment, is an antibiotic from the aminoglycoside class. It treats gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. It also contains Betamethasone, a prenisolone analog with significant corticosteroid and slight mineral corticosteroid action. Betamethasone Valerate is notably anti-inflammatory and anti-pruritic, which topically manages Clotrimazole and makes it an effective treatment for otitis externa responsive to corticosteroid treatment. Clotrimazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal that treats dermal infections, which may be associated with pathogenic dermatophytes and many yeasts. Clotrimazole primarily works to prevent the growth and division of organisms. Formulated For: Intended for dogs. How is Medication Given? Thoroughly clean and dry the external parts of the ear(s) prior to treatment. Any crusted exudates, debris, or foreign matter should be removed with a non-irritating, suitable solution. Trim any excessive hair away from the area, and confirm that the eardrum(s) is intact. Instill four drops (or 2 drops, if using a 215-gram bottle) twice each day into the ear canal(s) if your dog weighs under 30 pounds, or eight drops (or 4 drops, if using a 215-gram bottle) twice each day into the ear canal(s) if your dog weighs over 30 pounds. Continue treatment for a full 7 days. What Results Can I Expect? Otibiotic Ointment treats yeast or bacterial ear infections in dogs. What Form Does Medication Come In? Ointment Dose and Administration: Sold in a bottle containing 10 grams, 15 grams, or 25 grams. Possible Side Effects: This medication is an aminoglycoside. Poor skin absorption can cause adverse reactions, which might also lead to intoxication as a result of prolonged topical application to skin burns or wound for extended periods. This is particularly true in cases of renal insufficiency. Aminoglycosides can cause reversible or irreversible renal toxicity, vestibular toxicity, or cochlear toxicity.
