Description: Benazepril is an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor that is used to treat congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, and proteinuria in dogs and cats. Can be used as a supplemental treatment for some forms of kidney disease and to help reduce protein in the urine (proteinuria). Do not use this medication during pregnancy or in patients with acute kidney injury. May be prescribed for other animal species; please consult your veterinarian. Please consult your veterinarian before making any changes or discontinuing the prescribed dosing schedule. This medication can be given with or without food. If your pet vomits or appears unwell after receiving a dose on an empty stomach, give future doses with food or a small treat. If vomiting continues, contact your veterinarian. Missed Doses: Administer the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give two doses at once. Side Effects: This medication is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects may include (but are not limited to): vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, weakness fatigue, increased thirst or urination, and low blood pressure. Contact your veterinarian immediately if your pet has complete loss of appetite, appears extremely tired or dizzy, develops a rash, or any signs of infection (e.g., fever, chills) occur. Notify your veterinarian if your pet experiences any of the effects described above, or if you notice any other side effects that are persistent or troublesome. If you notice anything unusual, please consult your veterinarian. Precautions: Do NOT administer this medication during pregnancy. Safe use of this medication has not been established in nursing animals. Use with caution in animals with low sodium levels, low blood pressure, preexisting kidney, liver, or blood conditions, or that are dehydrated. Drug & Food Interactions: The following drugs* may have potential interactions with this medication: allopurinol, blood pressure medications (e.g., amlodipine, diuretics, telmisartan, sildenafil), CNS depressant drugs (e.g., acepromazine, hydroxyzine, opioids), corticosteroids (e.g., dexamethasone, prednisone), cyclosporine, NSAIDs, potassium supplements, pregabalin (Bonqat), and tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline, clomipramine). *NOTE: this may not be a comprehensive list. Please ensure your veterinarian is aware of all medications and supplements that your pet is currently receiving.
